This week in Volleyball Academy

Last weeks Friday Pick up games were so much fun...I put on my knee braces attempted for the second time in 25 years to play volleyball.  I still cannot jump and have issues with serving, passing, blocking. defense and few of the other skills but I did not mess up the water breaks.

We got seven feedbacks from the people who participated.
The session got seven 5/5 ratings
The comments were as follows:

  • Great place to get together and play.
  • My daughter came home and said it was a lot of fun -"It was good to play on a higher net and to play with kids older and better than me, I learned a lot by playing with them and I want to go again".
  • Fun way to spend a Friday night!
  • Perfect length of time and lots of fun!
  • Love it!!!

The business of doing business

Being a teacher for most of my adult life, my expertise in the business world is lack and for this reason, I find many things like pricing, bookkeeping, taxes, and fees very confusing.  It has taken me two years of running the academy to start to get my head around this aspect of the business.  My philosophy should not be and is not that "the books will balance themselves".  This I have found out as I am still trying to show that this business is a viable option for me to spend 8 plus hours a day on and not show a profit.  The number of costs associated with a business is truly staggering and makes me wonder how any business makes a go of it in this taxes and fees structured world.  I found out now that I do not have to charge PST but do have to charge GST for the events I run.  I do have to charge PST for the products I sell.  This is due to the fact it is a coaching and training events for under 18-year-old participants.  But I have found that the following cost has made it difficult to show a profit in the first couple of years of business.  Costs like business license, corporation set up fees, trademark acquisitions, lawyers fees, participant insurance fees, association fees, accountant fees, computer software fees, equipment fees, advertise and promotion, credit card fees, gym rental costs and allow the other little costs.  It is truly a major headache to do and explains why many would shy away from the monumental task of setting up a system to look after all these minor time sucking items.

I am learning all the time and getting better at it. but I still have a steep learning curve.  In the end, the one item which I find hard to get my head around is the large cost to rent gym space and difficulty I have securing the times in a gym.  A challenge but one that just needs to be learned like all others.

In the end, I am still enjoying the activities and will continue to try to offer the training at as cheap is is possible with the associated costs.

The Youth Elite Academy - Volleyball Basic Overhand

It was cold out, but we had 10 young female athletes and one male athlete in the warm gym learning from the great setting coach Toaka Chie Imamura.

The responses from the session rated it... 4.8/5.0

Every time, I work with Chie I learn something new or something I did not know about the setting position.

Gee Whiz, I wish I could throw...somedays it works and some days it does not.

I am in my socks because I played soccer and feet still hurt and hate shoes.

Chie in action.

Friday Night Pickup Games.

Sharing a thought.

The Canadian Elite Academy has set up Friday night Pickup Game night. Here is the thought process behind this activity.
• The more touches an athlete can have with a volleyball the better their skill development.
• The organize practices and games tend to be planned by a coach and does not allow a player to control their own growth.
• Friday nights pickup games are flexible and can be used in a variety of ways. Such as:
     o Just play volleyball.
o A different way to spend your Friday night.
o Build your confidence by just playing.
     o Practice your serves.
o Whole teams can use this time to bond.
o Set up an informal game against another team.
o Challenge another team, maybe one not even in the same gender or age.
o Play with some athletes of different gender, age, and skills.
o The three hours time block means an out of town team can come to play.
o Adult teams could come and use the time as well. (there is no age restriction.)
o Play with some of the elite academy coaches or team coaches (all coaches play for free)
o Bring a family member, ie: your parents, sister, brother or anyone else who can play.
o Get ready for a tournament the next day.
o Just a chance to put away the phone and technology and play volleyball.
o Setters and hitter coming to a session to work on their ability to run plays.
• The cost for three hours of gym time is approximately 45 dollars and the goal from the Canadian Elite Academy point of view is to cover the costs. It is 5 dollars a person or 40 dollars for a team (up to 13 players)
I will bring the ball and the music.
