One Week Left!

One Week Left!

We are one week away from our May Shutdown at the Academy.  The idea behind the shutdown is to allow us to stay away during the Variants of Concern.  I do not like the fact that they are showing up in more and more young people.  During May we will allow private lessons only.  This will control the numbers, and I should run most of the private sessions as I do not want to expose our coaches until the vaccines start to help.

On the site, there will be a session called "Private Lesson."  This is where you would register an individual or group private lesson.
The cost for the session is $149 for an hour-long session.
The athlete who registers will be asked:  What is the date you would like to have the private lesson?
What is the skill that you would like to work on in your private lesson?
What are the names of the athletes attending?  (this is where you would put the other athletes' names coming to the private lesson.  (you can have up to four athletes for the same price.)
Is there a coach that you would like to work with? (Please choose me as I do not want to use any other coaches during May)

It is not possible currently for the athletes to pay separately.  The private session is for one athlete.  That athlete is the lead for the sessions and determines the date, time, skill and coach, and then that athlete can determine which other athletes can attend his/her session.  (up to 3 other athletes)  In the past, many groups of athletes have used private lessons to control the date, time, skill and coach for a session. This flexibility allows the group to pick the date and time that works the best for them and get to choose the coach.  The flexibility of the private lesson is good for some groups as the scheduled academy sessions are arranged by the Head Coach of the Academy.  Often groups of athletes may not be able to be in the same group or the dates and times of the academy sessions; as they do not work with other commitments; the skill they need work on is not being offered, or the coach is not the one they like to work with.  The private lessons flexibility allows the group to control all of those factors.

In June, we will start our beach volleyball training sessions.  The June – August sessions are mostly sold out.  The Advanced Beach 2's girls session is one of the four that still has space in it.   So if you are a grade 11-12 athlete or are entering your second year of beach training, this session could be for you and your partner.

In July, we have a shorter beach volleyball training session.  The July – August session waits until school is over and earlier in the day (2-4 pm).  We have two sections, one advanced and one introductory session. This will allow athletes who play other sports to try their hand at beach volleyball because it should not interfere with other sports practices and games.

We offer our first-ever Age 11-13 Outdoor Volleyball Camp on the beach courts on July 12-15; come check this one out.  The sand teaches proper footwork agility and technique as the elements mess with the volleyball.

We also have a Setter, Libero and Hitter camp happening on July 19-22.  Sign up for this indoor camp. It is an excellent positional training camp.  We have run it in the past, and it has been well attended and popular.

Our Premier Camps

Our premier camps are coming at the end of August; check them out.  Making the Cut Camps.  We have a large number of athletes who attend just these offerings at the Academy.  We have so much fun, and it prepares the athletes for their school tryouts.

The Artist Elite Academy will be posting live free art lessons on Facebook every Thursday at 6:00 pm.  If you have a tablet come to watch and I will show you how to draw digitally.

The Canadian Elite Academy Top 10

Why the Canadian Elite Academy has been the choice for over 1000 participants last year?

Flexibility

- only come to and pay only for the sessions you attend.

Coaching

- the academy seeks the best coaches in the sport who are best at coaching the skill being taught and the level of the participants.

Coaching Ratio

- The academy tries to keep the ration of 10 participants to 1 coach.

Cost

 - The academy attempts to keep the cost of the session as low as possible.

Team Building

- We do not build teams, we teach skills that can then be used on the participants' team of choice.

No Membership Fee

- If you attend one session or a hundred sessions you are an academy member.

Listen

- The academy listens to its members and is a community of participants.

Private Sessions

- as well as our group sessions we offer private sessions.  One coach and up to four participants, the session focus is determined by the participant.

Elite

- helps each participant to reach their elite level.  To allow them to be better tomorrow then they are today.

Tips and Hints Activity

During this time when all coaches, parents, and players are in social isolation, the Canadian Elite Academy has a couple of virtual ideas to allow us to continue to build the community.  The Academy is thinking about putting together a set of 30-second volleyball hints which we could share within the CEA community, Facebook, Youtube, and other online communities as the world of volleyball enthusiasts is craving something, anything about volleyball.  The Canadian Elite Academy participants can help provide this something.
  • Coaches and Players can participate
  • Use a cell phone camera to create a 30-second hint or tips.
  • Hints can be about something we have found works for a volleyball skill development.  ie.  If you are going to miss a serve miss it long not short.  Long someone might be silly enough to touch it.
  • Tips can be something we have found helps us play.  Ie. Wearing knee pads protect my knees by warming them up and creating protection if I should happen to hit them on something.
  • Send it to the Academy and we will post it on a community page for everyone to view.
  • Share motivational thoughts or ideas
  • Make a video to thank a coach you have had in the past.
  • Coaches talk about an inspirational player you might have coached
  • Let us all build a volleyball free repository during this time of isolation.
Share a tip, hint or motivation

The 30 day Home Workout

With Age Class Nationals being canceled all the age class volleyball players are disappointed but are seeking a way to prepare for the day that they can get back into the gym and play our game.  What I have done is seek the best the volleyball online world has to offer about working out at home.  The 30-day course is a collection of 30 different people and organizations' suggestions on what an athlete could do at home with no equipment to improve their volleyball game.  The cost for the course is a five dollars fee per participant and will cover the cost of putting the information and videos into a learning platform to help volleyball players of any age continue to work on their game.  The access to the material will never end and can be used for the rest of the participant's volleyball career on off-days and off-seasons to maintain their skills, jump, and fitness.  The one concern with this offering is the lack of supervision and that all exercises are not suitable or appropriate for everyone.  Keeping this in mind the Canadian Elite Academy disclaims any liability from injury from the use of these internet resources to assist in the participant's personal fitness plan.  The only safe way to set up a personal plan is to consult a professional healthcare provider before attempting any exercise or exercise program  The resource is meant to offer a variety of exercises focusing on volleyball skills, jump and fitness level.
The Volleyball Home Workout Registration

Online Volleyball Serving Course

The first learning opportunity is an Online course using a platform called Udmey.  It was the opportunity I offered before in a previous newsletter, the course was not open as it was being reviewed.  That process is finished and has now been open and the following information will allow the course for free to the Canadian Elite Academy participants.  The course is on the Volleyball Standing serve and even if you are a good server, coach or past player I would love to hear your opinion of the course.  To register for free use this link.

https://www.udemy.com/course/canadian-elite-academy-volleyball-serving/?couponCode=42C4928484FA8EC5AEF5

The code is 42C4928484FA8EC5AEF5 if you would like to share it with another Canadian Elite Academy participant.

The code will only work if you register before March 28, 2020, 4:43 PM PDT

CEA Virtual Locker Room

We have started our transition from Face to Face to Virtual.

We have completed two different online learning opportunities.  As we are new to the virtual offerings we would like our Canadian Elite Academy past participants to be given the opportunities for free and as cheap as possible.   The target audience is worldwide as it is as easy to offer the current opportunities to a person on the other side of the world as it is to a person next door.   Keeping this in mind we would like to have the Canadian Elite Academy suggest, comment and help to make our offerings better.  Online opportunities are never complete and continue to get better the more people who have an opportunity to participate and help by reviewing.

Canadian Elite Academy - Virtual Locker Room Volleyball Basic Serving Course

CEA Virtual Locker Room Volleyball 30 Day Home Work-out

The third course I am looking at Volleyball Elite Academy off-season daily work out.  Each day using Google classroom the interest participants will be able to access a virtual person workout created by me by pulling together exercises from awesome coaches all around the world.  The exercises will work on players' motivation, movement, skill training, strength and jump training drills.  These sessions will cost the participants 2 dollars a day and participants will be required to register for 30 days at a time.  The 30-day registration will allow the athlete to spread the daily exercises over 60 days if they only want to work out every second day.  This too will be announced and available by the end of the week.  You can pre-register for this course on the Canadian Elite Academy website.  The first 60 days cycle will begin when it is completed and ready to go.  The workout schedule will start on a certain day and will end 60 days after the start.  The price will not change so if you want the full 60 days register early.  The second cycle will start 30 days after the first cycle’s start date.  I know this sounds confusing but in the virtual world select release is always a workaround to make a program possible.
The internet is full of work out ideas for all different sports and the Canadian Elite Academy has sorted through the volleyball online solo training videos and has selected the best exercise drills available and compiled them into an online learning management system (google classroom). Darren Cannell is a Google certified instructor as well as a Microsoft innovative hero of education who will apply his experience and education to attempt to build a system which will virtually build a community of people and motivate them virtually to continue to work on their volleyball skills during the off-season and during times of isolation. These daily workouts should not be done on practice or game days, hence the reason why a 30-day session is spread out over the 60 days allowing the participants to decide when is the best day for them to work out. This being an information session without direct supervision from the Canadian Elite Academy staff means that the responsibility for participants to be able to work safely and successfully take their skills to the next level is theirs alone. The Canadian Elite Academy is offering the exercises but the participants must decide which is the best way for them to be safe but still motivate themselves.

Is the sport post-game handshake between teams become a thing of the past?

In 2019 the academy had 900 plus participants, for about the last three years at the end of each session the athletes have come by to shake the coach's hand and I began to fist bump then because there were so many of them.  Back when I was a teacher I was exposed to lots and lots of students but since my retirement, I have found that I am not exposed to as many people.  For this reason, I decided the fist bump was a good way to end the session and not lool anti-social, little did I know that I was years ahead on the coronavirus disease.
Now, in a world where contact can be dangerous, maybe it is time that at the end of sporting events two teams need to do the hip hip hoorays and then fist bump rather than shaking hands.  For years the team water bottles have been a thing of the past and maybe the post-game handshake now is gone as well.

Loss of High School Sports. Now What?

Being an ex-teacher I wanted to let people know about the sanctions which were announced today by the Saskatchewan Teacher Federation.  The Saskatchewan teachers announce sanctions, withdrawing voluntary and extracurricular services. Until these sanctioned are removed it is my understanding that all sports in the school will be removed.  It is our hope at the Academy that the Government and the Teacher Federation quickly resolve this to allow the athletes the opportunity to resume their current sports seasons and allow for future seasons. The academy was concerned about its ability to rent the school's gym to continue to offer the skill development and was told that it was not a concern and the sports skills training will continue.
The first response of the athletes who only see the loss of a season is anger and the desire to just quit and think it is a waste of time to continue to train with no foreseeable possibility of putting the skills to use in a game situation. The benefits that I got from playing Volleyball, Soccer and the other sports in my life have been health, self-confidence self-esteem and the ability to manage my anxiety and emotions.  It has taught me the value of teamwork, leadership, social skills and discipline which I have been able to successfully apply to many other aspects of my life.  The training allowed me to fight stress to improve my ability to think clearly and memory.  It was a career path that I followed as a physical education teacher, a coach and has allowed me to build the academy.  The greatest memory in sports for me was not an individual game or season but a time where I trained as hard an I could and made the sport the number one priority in my life and was able to see just how good I could become at something if I applied myself and earned the skills.  A memory which I have applied to many other aspects of my life because it is my firm belief that anything of value has to be earned not given and the harder it is to achieve the more valuable it becomes.  And last but not least sports allowed me to meet my wife and have given me a way to relate, interact and build a relationship with my son.
In fewer words, the benefits of sports go way beyond the immediate games which have now been removed from many high school sports athletes.  The challenge of training to make yourself better is never a waste of energy as I can now see with my hindsight of the years of training in which I grew as an athlete, a coach, and a person.  The loss of the ability to apply your skills as an athlete in the formal game situation due to the sanctions will be a greater issue if you allow this setback to impact more than just a few games.  Age has removed my ability to apply my sports skills at the level that I once could but I still benefit greatly from the years I dedicated to training and trying to make myself better.
Not to make light of the loss of the games or the games themselves but the value of sport is in the training for the games.  Making oneself better is an individual activity that has not been removed by the sanctions.  Train and train hard and when the games return you will be better equipped than you are now for sports and life.

Why Private Sessions

Private Sessions
These are becoming very popular at the Academy.  Pre-scheduled sessions are already on the calendar and tend to sell out very quickly, but the academy will try to find a time in the gym and with a coach which suits the participant's busy schedule if possible. The reason why these sessions are so popular is…
  • ·         Quality of our Coaches
  • ·         1-4 participants same price
  • ·         Participants pick the topic
  • ·         Coaches are assigned based on skills requested
  • ·         The participant can request a certain coach
  • ·         The awesome ratio of coach to athlete
  • ·         The academy tries it’s best to accommodate participant's requests of time, location and coach.
  • ·         The whole team's private lessons are also a thing and normally occur during team practice times and locations.

A few Quick necessary Changes

The changes.

This special email notice is to let participants know that due to some recent emails we have decided to allow people to register for only one of the two days of the “Everything in Four Hours” volleyball session on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.  It is evident that many athletes are involved in the Wednesday night volleyball league in Martinsville making it difficult for them to attend both of the sessions, so we decided to make it possible to only attend one.

The coaches for Tuesday, February 25, 2020, from 8-10 pm are two excellent coaches, Bill Beaudry as head coach

and Jenna Stevenson as an assistant coach.

On Wednesday, February 26  from 7-9, Darren Cannell will be the head coach.  We look forward to seeing you on the court.
