We have hit our goal.  Time to Celebrate

The Summer goals

The interest in the academy and quality of our athletes continue to amaze me and brings a smile to my face.
We planned to have 75 athletes at the Making the Cut camp and we have done that.
We planned doubled our numbers in the beach doubles training program and we have done that.
We planned to increase the success rate of beach athletes and Michele our coach did more than that.
We planned to have the free beach sessions double in popularity and we have done that.
W planned to host a quality beach tourney and we have done that.

We have reached our goals.

If you are one of the twenty-four athletes who trained all summer we are seeking our King and Queen of the Beach this Tuesday on Father Robinson Beach courts from 4-8pm.  This unique individual tournament format is so cool and fun it is not something you want to miss watching or playing in it.  To watch it cost nothing, to play in it cost nothing but is restricted to just the 24 beach doubles training group of athletes.   To watch it everyone is invited. The draw will be made on Monday at midnight so register before that.

Register here
Even though we have reached our goal.  We still can allow one or two more registrations but will need to cut that off if the academy cannot find a few more coaches who can reach the standard required by the academy.

Register for the final few spots.
We at the academy designed a new 22-second video.  Let us know what you think?

Ottawa Trip June 5-7 2020

Ottawa Trip Next June 5-7 2020
We are off to Ottawa to watch our Men's National Team prepare for the Olympic games by playing three other country's National teams in the Volleyball Nations League.  To show you have an intent to go on this trip we ask that people register with a fifty dollar fee.  This money will be used to buy a portion of your tickets to the games.  We are looking for a group of about 10-15 athletes and their parent(s).  The particulars of how this event will happen will be planned by the group as hit our targeted number of athletes.

Volleyball Nations League Weekend Trip

Yes I made a Mistake

But I fixed it...

At the beginning of August, we open up a few more spots in the Making the Cut camp where you could register for individual sessions and not just the whole four days.  With this change, I had set it up so you have to register for each of the sessions individually which would have taken for a very long time to register for anything other than a single session.  Thankfully a frequent user contacted me and asked if there is not a way to fix that as it was a really poor design.  With a little quiet and thought I pondered the issue and fixed it.  Right after the fix, we had four or five partial registration, so people were waiting for the fix.  Comments, suggestions, and complaints are always welcome as they help the academy continue to develop the best system possible.  If you want to register for the Making the Cut camp there are still a few spots.

ON‐COURT ADVICE/ONE‐LINERS FOR ACADEMY COACHES

  • We are here to have FUN and learn volleyball
  • Show them before telling them
  • Young people need models, not critics
  • Stay out of nearly all drills, including any tossing, so you can coach
  • Conduct yourself professionally—don’t do anything you wouldn’t Dr. Darren Cannell to see
  • Mention the goal or focus of the drill, if needed
  • Always end the drill on a positive note
  • Build on strengths, rather than focus on weaknesses
  • Positive, brief keywords
  • Give them PLENTY of water
  • Refrain from using the word “don’t” EX: “Don’t swing” in an athlete’s mind may register as “do swing”, the brain does not register the negative
  • Stop drills while intensity remains
  • Fatigue is detrimental to learning
  • Vary toss positions, timing and toss heights, not the drill mechanics
  • The camp is for trying new things!
  • Create an environment where there is no fear of making a mistake
  • The skills that the coaches use should be at the High School level—high toss, readable actions, IQ, etc.
  • Speak to each player at least once every day—not just the superstar
  • Have the targets practice moving to the ball by catching it before it hits the ground
  • Never set limits on your players
  • Try to create each drill so that there is 0‐little standing around. The campers paid to touch the ball as much as possible and get better.
  • Use specific feedback
  • Ask questions instead of dictating to enhance learning
  • Teach something beyond them—life lessons
